From the fruits of Tawḥīd and firm belief in al-Qadar is having complete reliance upon Allāh (عز وجل), which in turn leads to many other benefits, both religious and worldly. Acting upon certainty, or overwhelming strong belief and verified causes lead a person to ease of mind, heart and soul, and to tranquility. However, entertaining delusions and imaginations, being affected by them, and acting upon them, is the way to both mental and physical diseases. Such affairs enter people into the hospitals (and the graves).

Imām al-Saʿdī (رحمه الله) said:[1]

One of the greatest treatments for neurological heart diseases, and even for physical diseases, is the strength of the heart and the lack of its disturbance and reaction to delusions and (unreal) imaginations brought about by bad thoughts.

This is because when a person surrenders to imaginations and his heart reacts to influences such as fear of diseases and other things, and to anger and confusion from painful causes, and expectation of the occurrence of misfortunes and the loss of loved ones, this will cause him worries, sorrows, diseases of the heart and body, and nervous breakdown, which has bad effects that people have witnessed the many harms of.

When the heart depends upon Allah, puts its trust in Him, does not surrender to delusions, nor is it overcome by bad imaginations, but has confidence in Allah and hopes for His bounty, worries and sorrows will be driven away from it, many ailments of the heart and body will be removed, and the heart will attain strength, joy and happiness that cannot be expressed.

How many hospitals have been filled with patients suffering from delusions and corrupt imaginations! How many of these things have affected the hearts of the strong, let alone the weak! How many have they led to foolishness and madness!

The one who is healed is the one whom Allāh has healed and granted success in striving against his soul to acquire beneficial means that strengthen the heart and dispel its anxiety. Allāh the Exalted says: “And whoever relies upon Allah, then He is sufficient for him.” (65:3-), meaning He is sufficient for all that concerns him in his religious and worldly affairs.

So he who relies upon Allāh is strong-hearted and is not affected by delusions, nor is he disturbed by the events (that take place around him), because he knows that this is due to the soul’s weakness, and to weakness and fear that has no reality. He also knows that Allāh has guaranteed complete sufficiency for the one who relies upon Him.

Hence, he trusts in Allāh and is reassured by His promise, so that his worry and anxiety disappear, his hardship is replaced by ease, his sorrow by joy, and his fear by security. So we ask Him, the Exalted, for well-being, and that He bestows upon us a strong heart and steadfastness through complete reliance, for whose people Allāh has guaranteed all good, and the removal of all harm and injury.
