Hānī bin Burayk, after entry into politics, opposed the legitimate ruler in Yemen, caused a split, took up arms and traversed the methodology of the Khārijites (of exiting from obedience to the ruler and rebelling against him). He ended up being in open conflict with Saudi Arabia whose policy has been one of maintaining a strong and unified Yemen for the purposes of regional security. Hence, the advice of the senior scholars has been to remain on the side of the alliance led by Saudi Arabia.
Shaykh Rabīʿ bin Hādī said:
Hānī bin Burayk used to claim Salafiyyah but politics ruined him, and he deviated severely, and became a democrat and a socialist, joining the socialists. He turned his back on the Salafi methodology. No attention should be given to him and nor should he be inclined to. The Salafis should not participate with him, ever.
Shaykh ʿUbayd al-Jābirī said (on 15 Shaʿbān 1438):
I call Allāh, the Sublime and Exalted, to witness, and present from the noble angels and I call you to witness who are sitting (here) and whomever this message reaches that I am free of Hānī and his methodology, for his methodology which he has traversed lately is a vile methodology.
