Nuʿaym Ibn Ḥammād (d. 229H) and the Jahmiyyah

Al-Ḥāfiḍh al-Dhahabī, in al-Siyar records the following in the biography of Nuʿaym bin Ḥammād al-Khuzāʿī (d. 228H):[1]

Aḥmad said: “Nuʿaym used to be a scribe for Abū ʿIṣmah—meaning Nūḥ—who was severe in refuting the Jahmiyyah and the people of desires, and Nuʿaym learned from him.”

Ṣāliḥ bin Mismār said that he heard Nuʿaym bin Ḥammād saying: “I used to be a Jahmite, so I knew (the reality of) their saying. When I sought ḥadīth, I realised that their affair returns to taʿ ṭīl (negation of the Attributes).”

Al-ʿAbbās bin Muṣʿab said: “Nuʿaym bin Ḥammād al-Fāriḍī authored books refuting Abū Ḥanīfah and challenging (the views of) Muḥammad bin al-Ḥasan. He also wrote thirteen books refuting the Jahmiyyah, and was among the most knowledgeable people regarding inheritance laws.”

Note

He is Nuʿaym bin Ḥammād, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Khuzāʿī al-Marwazī. He narrated from Abū Ḥamzah al-Sukkarī, Abū Bakr bin ʿAyyāsh, ʿAbd Allāh bin al-Mubārak, Fuḍayl bin ʿIyāḍ, Sufyān bin ʿUyainah and many other notable Imāms of the Salaf. Those who narrated from him include al-Bukhārī (when combined with another narrator’s chain), Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah (through an intermediary), Yaḥyā bin Maʿīn and others.

He was tested with the saying of the Qurʾān being created during the era of the Miḥnah, but he refused, and died in prison in 229H. Though he possessed knowledge and was severe against the people of innovation, there were issues regarding his reliability as a narrator and al-Dhahabī said: “Nuʿaym is one of the senior vessels of knowledge, yet the soul does not find comfort in his reports.”[2]
